Offering Objective

- Describe the pathophysiology of a concussion and its contributing role to the multi-faceted intervention approach towards the treatment of individuals sustaining a concussion.
- Understand when physical therapy is indicated for a patient suffering from a concussion and when it is appropriate/needed to refer out (emergency and non-emergency).
- Identify the different clinical trajectories a patient suffering from prolonged concussion symptoms can fall into and recognize which interventions are beneficial for that trajectory.
- Describe different members of a concussion management team and understand the role a physical therapist plays in concussion rehabilitation.
- Perform a physical therapy examination of an individual with a concussion including musculoskeletal, vestibular, and visual systems.
- Demonstrate effective musculoskeletal, vestibular, and vision therapy interventions for a patient suffering from a concussion.
- Discuss the role physical therapists can serve in the return-to-play decisions of a concussed athlete.
- Develop a return-to-play exercise program for an athlete based on their sport
- Understand the common complications students have returning to the classroom after a concussion and be able to recommend different accommodations they might need.
- Understand the current research evidence that supports the use of physical therapy as a treatment option in the management of post-concussion patients.
